About

History

In the spring of 1988, Sylvia Cool bought an abandoned building with a leaky roof, concrete floors and one restroom. In its long history, the building had been home to a variety of businesses, including a sewing shop, bakery and an auto mechanic's shop. Syl intended to add one more to that list: neighborhood bar. Originally from New York City, Syl wanted to name her business in honor of her hometown…so with little more than a vision and elbow grease, The Manhattan was born.

The Manhattan enjoyed one owner before Syl handed the reins to her son, Robert Andrew, and his wife, Nancy (DeGrado) Andrew in 2008. Bob and Nancy began their relationship and had their first few dates at The Manhattan, so it’s fitting that the two now run the establishment. They have maintained the bar’s small-town charm with pool tables and electronic darts, while upgrading many features, including the addition of an internet jukebox, flat screen televisions, free wireless internet access and frequent live music and karaoke.

For over 20 years this family-owned and operated bar has played host to weddings, birthday parties, holiday dinners, retirement celebrations and even wakes for friends and family members. The Manhattan also sponsors a local softball and bowling team. When the Manhattan originally opened its doors there were 10 bars in Newton; only 3 remain today. Stop in, enjoy a drink and support this locally-owned business. The Manhattan: where good friends and good times get together!
